Course Modalities at CBC

A course modality identifies how the class will be taught. The class may be held face-to-face, online, in a combination of both, or in HyFlex. Columbia Basin College offers various ways for students to successfully complete their courses.

  • Face-to-Face

    • Course instruction is provided at a specific location on a specific day and time in person.
    • All students are expected to meet in real time at scheduled class times, in-person, in an on-campus location.

  • Asynchronous Online

    • Course instruction is provided online without specific days and times assigned to the class.
    • All students are expected to complete coursework online according to the deadlines set by the course instructor.

  • Hybrid

    • Course instruction is provided at a specific location on a specific day and time (as with Face-to-Face classes), and part of the course is also completed online either synchronously or asynchronously, depending on the course content.
    • All students are expected to follow specific course policies and guidelines individually set by the course instructor.
    • How it looks on class schedule:
      • Varies. Further instruction will be provided by the course instructor in the first week of the instruction.
  • HyFlex

    • Course instruction is provided in three different modalities: Face-to Face, Synchronously Online, or Asynchronously Online, and students have the option to attend each class period in any of three modalities.
    • Students sign up for one single class and choose how, when, and where they attend class to have an equitable learning experience regardless of the modality of their choice.

Frequently Asked Questions about HyFlex

No, it is not required. Students have the option to attend each class period

  1. in-person during the scheduled class time
  2. online during the scheduled class time, or
  3. online outside of the scheduled class time

Yes, you can. You can access recorded lectures and complete coursework by the deadlines set by the instructor.

CBC uses Zoom as the primary platform for online classes. Please refer to the course Canvas page for more information provided by each instructor.

Yes. How you attend class and do the work is up to you as the student and can change as necessary from day to day.

Arranged classes are fully online courses that have no requirement to meet up as a class at any given time. The course is completely online with all information and assessments done online.

HyFlex classes give the student the flexibility to decide how they would like to participate in the course at any given time. Either by showing up to campus for in person, face-to-face, by Zooming in at the specified time OR by watching a recording of the class. Both classes require work and engagement with the course content online, outside of scheduled class time.

How you choose to attend and engage in the course (face-to-face, on Zoom or online) does not impact your grade. Read the syllabus carefully and understand the expectations around activities, discussions, exams, etc. That make up the grading for the course.

You do not, however the benefits for both the student on Zoom and the students in the classroom to interact and engage with each other is better when people can “see” each other.

You will want to check with your HyFlex instructor if it is not indicated in the syllabus.  Some may require it to do online activities in class and others may not.

No, it is not. This course will require online accessibility outside of the scheduled class time regardless of if you attend in person (face-to-face) every class.
