Columbia Basin College (CBC) is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI)
An institution becomes eligible to apply to become an HSI when they reach a full time
Hispanic student enrolling population of 25% and 50% student body eligble for federal
financial assistance. CBC is currently at 47% full time Hispanic student enrolling
population and has been an HSI since 2014.
What Does Being an HSI Mean to CBC?
Being an HSI allows CBC to apply to Title III and Title V grants to assist in expanding educational opportunities for, and improve the attainment of, Hispanic students. These grants also enable CBC to expand and enhance academic offerings, program quality, and institutional stability.
CBC Receives Title V Grant
Columbia Basin College has been awarded a Title V Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI)
Grant. The $3 million dollar grant, funded by the U.S Department of Education, will
support the entire CBC student body by focusing on reducing gaps between First Time-Entering
College Hispanic and Non-Hispanic students in retention and completion or transfer,
increasing diversity students' retention and sense of belonging and improve students
academic, social, and emotional success, from enrollment through completion.
The grant will fund an Equity Center, faculty development, and course and curriculum
redesign.

HSI Week 2024: September 16-20
The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) announced National Hispanic Serving Institution Week to be from September 16-20, 2024. HSI Week aligns with the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month which is observed from September 15-October 15. HSIs are encouraged to celebrate the week with events and activities that celebrate the Hispanic heritage and highlight the importance of HSIs in decreasing the equity gap for Hispanic/historically underserved students.
