What is Upward Bound?
Are you a motivated high school student looking at becoming the first in your family to successfully pursue a college degree? CBC’s Upward Bound program wants to help you realize that dream! As an Upward Bound participant, you can get the support you need to complete high school and learn valuable skills towards success in college too.
Upward Bound students participate in both summer and school-year programs and, following high school graduation, are encouraged to enroll in the BRIDGE program—an intensive mentoring opportunity designed to guide students like you through your first summer quarter of college coursework.
Upward Bound Benefits:
- Academic tutoring and advising
- Personal mentoring
- Cultural event attendance
- College visits across Washington state
- Pre-college workshops in a wide variety of topics from financial literacy to scholarships and careers.
- Community service opportunities
- Summer enrichment instruction
“I want to thank Upward Bound for all of the help I received. I consider the program family. Because of all the help and support from Upward Bound, I was able to attend CBC and get exposure to universities. Now, as I am getting ready to graduate with my Ph.D as a research scientist, I want future participants to know that all the work this program does matters!”

Since 2016, I have had the privilege of working with first-generation students. I am passionate about working with our students and it has been such a wonderful experience to see our students accomplish their academic goals! I was a part of TRIO programs that helped me accomplish my own educational goals. TRIO WORKS!

I have worked with Upward Bound for over 20 years. My job is to engage our students' minds and show them the possibility of higher education. Martin Luther King, Jr. said it best, "The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and critically. Intelligence plus character--that is the goal of true education."

I am an alumna of CBC and throughout college I was fortunate enough to work and be a part of grant funded programs like CAMP, HEP, and TRIO as a student employee and paraprofessional. I participated in programs like TRIO SSS when I attended CBC and I know first-hand the struggles a first-generation and underrepresented student might face. While working at CBC, I discovered my true passion for working with college students, particularly first-generation students. I hope to provide the same support I received through programs like CAMP and TRIO, contribute to my community, and advocate for first-generation students.
Upward Bound at CBC is 100% federally funded at $377,518 annually. Each year, we serve approximately 83 participants from three high schools.
