For spring break 2009, ASCBC funded a research trip for three students and one advisor to briefly compare elements of CBC and Bridgwater College in England. Bridgwater College is a sister college to CBC and is located in Somerset County in the town of Bridgwater (which is approximately three hours southwest of London).
The project was structured by the Director for Student Success and Engagement, Alice B. Schlegel, and applications were distributed to the student body. The application was extensive and included several letters of recommendation, the answering of multiple essay questions, and a personal resume. A project outline explaining the various project components was also included. A committee which included two staff members and a student leader selected two of the participants, Angela Combs and Cori Smith. The third participant, Tiffany Koch, was pre-selected due to her knowledge of student life and her position at the time of interim ASCBC President.
The students spent five days in Bridgwater researching their projects and three days in London sightseeing/adjusting to the time change. The students and advisor were required to keep a daily travel blog which documented their daily activities and learning. This blog was uploaded to the ASCBC Facebook page to keep students and staff informed.
Upon return, the student researchers were required to do three separate PowerPoint presentations to ASCBC Congress (which has since switched to two Councils), the larger student body, and the CBC Board of Trustees. They also wrote the text and took photographs for a beautiful travel guide, which was designed and published by the CBC Graphics department. The guide includes many traveling abroad tips as well as information about Bridgwater College.
