The CBC Library provides a variety of opportunities for students to learn how to select and use our resources effectively and responsibly to better meet their class-related information needs.
Basic Orientation - FYI Library Assignment - A library tour with a quiz offers a basic introduction to the Library's facility, resources, and services; all students should take this as part of FYI. A demonstration of our catalog and EBSCO host periodical index are included. This is available through Angel; students in FYI should have access automatically, other registered students may view the tour and other materials in the 'CBC Library Research' course in Angel - just click on the content tab.
Evaluating Sources - FYI Module - This optional FYI workshop teaches students about the variety of information sources available to them and how to select the best ones for CBC research assignments.
Classes - Many instructors bring their classes to the CBC Library to provide them with instruction specific to their discipline and/or assignments. Our librarians can assist in a variety of ways, from preparing a reserve collection of relevant resources to performing instruction sessions that prepare students to do extensive research projects. When classes come into the Library they generally use our Epicenter; librarians can also provide students with information about our resources in other classrooms on campus, but this doesn't offer students the same opportunity for hands-on practice. To request Library instruction or reserve the Epicenter computer lab please contact Reference at 509-542-4890 (on campus dial x2290) or via email at library@columbiabasin.edu; advance notice is greatly appreciated and helps ensure availability of needed resources.
Handouts and Resource Guides - Our librarians have prepared paper handouts and online resource guides that will assist you with both general needs (our database password or citing sources, for instance) and specific classes/assignments. We have created a 'CBC Library Research' section in Angel which should be available to all registered students; visit the content tab for links to pages that will help you get started with the research process and learn how to use some of our databases. We also have a Topic of the Week blog with topic suggestions and numerous examples of database searches. Please contact us if you have any difficulty gaining access, or if you do not find what you need.
