If the fire is small and extinguishable:
- Never put yourself in harms way - evacuate the room where the fire is located to maintain your safety.
- Confine the fire by shutting the room door.
- Extinguish the fire using a fire extinguisher if possible.
- Notify CBC Security at ext. 2219 or ext. 2333 from campus phones, 542-4819 or 542-5533 from cell phones. On weekend or weekdays after 4 p.m., call 521-4599. At Richland campus, call 531-4034.
If the fire is large, very smoky, or rapidly spreading:
- Immediately sound the building fire alarm and evacuate the building.
- Call 911.
- Notify CBC Security at ext. 2219 or ext. 2333 from campus phones, 542-4819 or 542-5533 from cell phones Weekend or weekdays after 4 p.m., call 521-4599. At Richland campus, call 531-4034.
- Inform others in the building, who may not have responded to the alarm, to evacuate immediately.
- Walk, do not run, to the nearest exit.
- Assure that persons with disabilities are assisted in evacuations.
- Secure entrances and warn others who may try to enter the building after the alarm stops.
- Do not use an elevator, which may become inoperative.
- A large-scale fire should be handled per the CBC Emergency Plan and Emergency Operation Center procedures.
The Dean of each building should orientate new faculty and staff about emergency building representatives, emergency evacuation procedures, locations of fire extinguishers, and fire alarm pull stations and how to operate the pull stations. All faculty and staff should familiarize themselves with the instructions on the fire extinguishers in their building prior to the beginning of each quarter, and review the CBC Safety Manual, Emergency Plan, and Emergency Operation Center procedures on a quarterly basis.
