In 2009, Paul Schreiber established a scholarship honoring Herbert Scogg, longtime teacher, swimming coach, and administrator of the Public School System in Midland Michigan. Coach Scogg turned Schreiber’s life around by inviting him to start competitive swimming, pushing him to excel in sports and classes. Scogg celebrated Schreiber’s success and recommended him to a former coach, Dr. Samuel Cooper in Bowling Green, Ohio. Schreiber qualified for a scholarship at Bowling Green University, attended and continued to compete.
Herb Scogg received a B.S. degree from Bowling Green University in 1954 and a M.S. degree from West Virginia University in 1961. He taught and coached swimming in Midland, Michigan from 1956 to 1971 and then served as the Director of Athletics for the district schools. He trained Water Safety Instructors for many years and received the American Red Cross Lifetime Achievement award. Scogg’s work influenced and motivated the lives of many young men and women.
