Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
- ILL requests are only accepted from currently registered CBC students, faculty, or staff who are also registered CBC Library borrowers.
- Use ILL service only when materials needed for academic or CBC related purposes are not available at the CBC Library. You may wish to consult with a librarian (509-542-4890) to be sure you've exhausted all local resources. CBC Library currently covers all the fees and mailing costs for such requests.
- CBC faculty and staff who are performing research as a student or faculty member of another institution of higher learning should first contact that institution for interlibrary loan services. If the other institution is unable to fill a request, the CBC Library will work with the faculty or staff member. If there are fees associated with the request, the library will work with the individual and the College Administration to determine how to cover the cost.
- ILL takes up to two weeks, depending on the format and availability of the materials. Our reference librarians can help you explore your options.
- Requesters are responsible for checking out materials promptly and returning them on time or renewing well before the due date.
- The loan period for books is usually three weeks. Requesters must pay overdue fines and fees for repair or replacement.
- Place your request either in person with the Reference librarian, or by emailing library@columbiabasin.edu. Email requests must include CBC ID number. Please include detailed information about the item requested as well as numbers/times we can use to contact you by phone if necessary. You may also use the online forms listed below.

CBC Library Interlibrary Loan Procedure
Interlibrary loans may be requested when materials required for CBC academic or College-related purposes are not available at the CBC Library. Requests are only accepted from current CBC students, faculty, or staff. Staff and faculty needing materials for non-CBC academic purposes should consult with a librarian; interlibrary loan services may be extended provided doing so would be consistent with the mission and policies of the College and would not unduly strain the resources of the library. Students must also be registered as one of our borrowers and show their student ID card at the Circulation desk to pick up their ILL requests. Materials are borrowed through a voluntary cooperative agreement between libraries and other lending institutions in the United States and Canada. The Washington State Interlibrary Sharing Code and U.S. Copyright Law define and restrict this agreement.
Some institutions charge the CBC Library substantial fees for an interlibrary loan, and there are always processing and mailing or transmission expenses. It is currently the policy of CBC Library to bear all costs for CBC-related interlibrary loans. Most lending institutions grant a three-week loan for books with a one-time two-week renewal. Requesters are responsible for checking out their materials promptly and either returning them on time or asking for renewal well before the due date. The borrower must pay any overdue fines and fees for repair or replacement. Please note that failure to return materials on time will jeopardize the CBC Library's ability to secure interlibrary loans in the future.
Interlibrary loan requests are processed promptly by CBC staff. The length of time required to receive a request varies based on the format and availability of the materials. Items that may be sent to us electronically are often available in less than a week; books and other items that must be mailed can take up to two weeks to arrive. Please consult with our Reference Librarians if you anticipate needing materials that may not be available through our Library, and we can help you explore your options.
Copyright Statement
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code), governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order, if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
Thank you for using the CBC Interlibrary Loan Service.
