Withdrawal from a course must be initiated by the student by using Web Registration, submitting a Schedule Change form to Records, or meeting with a counselor before the deadline (see Academic Deadlines for current quarter). Students are encouraged to meet with their counselor or advisor and instructor prior to withdrawing from a class or from college. The counselor or advisor will review with the student the implications of withdrawing and other possible options.
Any student receiving financial aid is advised to speak with Financial Aid staff prior to withdrawing from a class, as there may be a negative impact on a student's ability to receive financial aid in the future and the student may owe a return of funds.
The institution sets final withdrawal deadlines based upon 75 percent of the scheduled class meetings. A student may withdraw from a full-term course with no record on the transcript if the withdrawal has been processed on or before the 10th day of the quarter. A student withdrawing from a full-term course after the 10th day, but on or before the 40th day of the quarter, shall have a "W" recorded on their transcript. For summer quarter and all alternative class schedules (i.e. fast track courses), visit Records for withdrawal deadlines.
Types of withdrawals:
- Student withdrawal: initiated by the student. A Petition for Exception may be submitted by the student requesting an official withdrawal after withdrawal deadlines. The petition must be submitted to Records. Circumstances for the request need to be documented. If approved, a "W" will be recorded on the transcript.
- Faculty withdrawal: initiated by the instructor. Withdrawal may be initiated as the result of excessive absences on or before the 40th day of the quarter. (For summer and alternate class schedules, contact Records for withdrawal deadlines (Policy, current Catalog). The request must include the attendance policy statement that appears in the class syllabus. If approved, a "WA" will be recorded on the transcript.
- Administrative withdrawal (VP Use Only): initiated by senior college administrators (e.g., VP of Student Services, VP for Instruction, Senior Vice President for Administrative Services, Registrar) for disciplinary actions, academic performances decisions, and health or safety issues. (Policy, current Catalog) If approved, a "WA" will be recorded on the transcript.
Warning: withdrawal may result in the student owing amounts to the Title IV program AND to CBC. Consult the Financial Aid office AND the Cashier's office before withdrawing.
